Walters joins film comp judges

Friday, July 20, 2012:

Julie Walters has revealed she "can't wait to get stuck in" to finding this year's Virgin Media Shorts winner.

The Bafta-winning actress joins a team of movie experts to judge the contest, which gives British filmmakers the chance to have their work showcased on more than 200 cinema screens nationwide as well as on TV, mobile phone and online.

Educating Rita star Julie said: "I have been really impressed by the entries I've seen so far and if the previous years are anything to go by, this year's winner is destined for great things.

"All eyes are on the UK right now and it's important that we continue to celebrate and support home grown talent."

The grand prize winner of the competition - now in its fifth year - will also win up to £30,000 in funding, and an opportunity to work with the British Film Institute to make their next short film.

Among those joining Julie on the panel are Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd, film critic James King, and Ashes director Mat Whitecross.

Virgin Media's Cindy Rose, who is also a judge, said: "We are thrilled to welcome Julie to this year's panel and believe she will bring a wealth of knowledge and insight from her amazing and varied career.

"From BAFTA nominations to Cannes Film Festival recognition, we have seen previous Virgin Media Shorts winners go on to do amazing things and we are so proud to have helped play a role in their success... Every year we see so many incredible short films and I believe 2012 will be no different."
